Sheaffer Balance Fountain Pen

The Sheaffer Balance fountain pen was a bit of a breakthrough pen for its time as it moved away from the profile that was favored by other manufacturers and came up with the far more streamlined version of this design. The Balance looks elegant and features the torpedo shape that we are mostly accustomed to seeing in many of the fountain pens created since.

The tapered ends of the Balance and the rounded shape of the cap feel great in the hand and would have been greatly appreciated by those who bought them when they were first released back around 1929. The pen is well named because it has great balance and weight. The distribution of weight in the pen is part of the pen’s appeal with the greater weight at the nib end getting lighter towards the back.

Take a look at the selection of Sheaffer Balance fountain pens for sale below for a vintage fountain pen that will be comfortable in the hand and still reliable as the days when it was one of the most popular fountain pens on the market.

One of the distinctive changes that occurred during the various releases of the Balances over its years of production was the way the clip looked. Early on there was a pronounced hump in the clip and it was quite long, reaching the edge of the cap’s metal band. The length of the clip grew successively shorter with each new release of the balance. As the clip became shorter the ball on the end of the clip also changed shape and size until, by the time the pen was released in 1942 the ball had disappeared off the end of the clip altogether.

Although the shape of the pen is consistent across the years and through the various types, Sheaffer offered the pen in a range of sizes. These sizes related to the length of the pens as well as the girth. The smallest of the Balance fountain pens is the Petite which measures 4-1/8” long, then comes the Lady at 4-3/4” and the Junior at 4-3/4” long. The full size length of the Balance is 5-3/8” long and these pens were also available in a variety of girths that would suit various hand sizes.
