Sheaffer PFM Fountain Pen

The Sheaffer PFM (Pen For Men) was first issued in 1959 and, although it was released around the time when the ballpoint pen was just beginning to take over as the writing implement of choice, the PFM would go on to become regarded as a classic.

The Sheaffer PFM made use of some of Sheaffer's finest technology with the snorkel filling system and the streamlined Inlaid Nib. The innovative nib construction has been in constant use ever since the release of the first PFM and can be seen in more recent times on the Sheaffer Valor.

Take a look at the selection of Sheaffer PFM fountain pens for sale below. These pens are constantly becoming available in varying conditions and given that some of them are over a half century old it is of significance that they are still in such fine working order.

The Sheaffer PFM ran to 9 separate models over the years, although the pen was out of favour in the early years. The PFM was simply referred to as Sheaffer PFM I thru Sheaffer PFM VIII with the ninth model named the Sheaffer PFM Autograph. The distinctions of each of the PFM models have been briefly summarized at the bottom of the page.

With a name such as the Pen For Men, the color range was never going to be too showy or flashy, preferring to stick to the more staid and conventional dark colors that reflect the hard businesslike men of the boardroom. The line ran to five dominant colors: black, blue, green, red and gray.

The distinctive feature of the Sheaffer PFM when it was released was the larger barrel it possessed compared to other pens of the time. It was a pen for men so it was made to fit a man’s hand. This was one of the problems with the pen’s initial acceptance because the barrel was considered large and unwieldy, but it was an attempt to break out of the thin designs that had been fashionable in the 1950s.

Basic features of the PFM range:
PFM I - Plastic cap and barrel, nickel plate clip and cap band, palladium silver point. No white dot.
PFM II - Frosted steel cap, nickel plate clip and cap band, plastic barrel, palladium silver point
PFM III - Plastic cap and barrel, gold fill clip and cap band, 14k gold point
PFM IV - Stainless steel cap, gold fill clip, gold fill "heel," 14k gold point.
PFM V - Gold plated cap, gold fill clip and "heel", 14k gold point.
PFM VI - Gold filled barrel, gold fill cap, 14k gold point.
PFM VII - Plastic barrel, 14k gold cap and clip, 14k gold point
PFM VIII - 14k gold barrel, cap and clip, 14k gold point.
PFM Autograph - Black plastic barrel and cap, 14k gold band and clip, 14k gold point
