Sheaffer Tuckaway Fountain Pen

The Sheaffer Tuckaway fountain pen is the perfect pocket pen as the name suggests. It has been designed specifically for storing in a pocket or a small space and because of this it has the distinctive feature of not having a clip. A shortened “clip” exists but nothing like the normal length clips that we are used to seeing on most pens. The length of the pen is another distinctive feature of these models measuring only 4 and a half inches long.

The Tuckaway fountain pen was produced in the 1940s and is available as a Touchdown with a Triumph nib. The Tuckaway fountain pens were originally produced in five colors: Persian Blue, Black, Evergreen Green, Burgundy and Burnt Umber.

Not everyone requires a large, oversized barrel when they buy a fountain pen and the Tuckaway meets the needs for those who like a nice compact type of fountain pen.

Apart from the issue with the shortened version of the clip, the Tuckaway is unique in another way too. The pen has been designed with a thread on the back half of the barrel so that the cap can be screwed on to post it. Posting the cap has the effect of lengthening the overall profile of the pen because the cap is quite long and when it is posted onto the shortened back part it turns the 4-1/8” pen into a 5-7/16” pen.

When the Tuckaway was first released in 1940 it was available in a lever-filling version. A later release in 1941 was added to the range and this was a Vacuum-Fil version. In 1942 the Tuckaway was released again and this time it bore the revolutionary “Triumph” point.

The filling system of the Tuckaway remained the same until 1949 when Sheaffer introduced the Touchdown filling system. This filling system resulted in a slight lengthening of the barrel of the pen.
